History

FC Ajax

Sporting Clube de Portugal, widely known as Sporting CP or simply Sporting, was founded on July 1, 1906, by José Alvalade and a group of passionate Lisbon sportsmen who dreamed of creating a club that would be "as great as the greatest in Europe." From its earliest years, Sporting became one of Portugal’s “Big Three” football institutions, alongside Benfica and FC Porto, and has remained a cornerstone of Portuguese sporting culture ever since.

The club’s identity is symbolized by its green and white stripes and its emblematic lion, representing courage, ambition, and pride. Sporting CP’s home ground, the Estádio José Alvalade, is not only one of the most modern stadiums in Portugal but also a place of deep emotion and loyalty for its fans, known as the Sportinguistas.

Throughout its history, Sporting has won dozens of national championships, Portuguese Cups, and Super Cups, and remains one of the few clubs to have conquered a major European trophy — the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1964. However, beyond trophies, the club is perhaps best known for its world-class youth academy, Academia Sporting, which has produced legendary talents such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Luís Figo, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma, João Moutinho, and Bruno Fernandes. This commitment to developing young players has made Sporting a global reference in football education.

Today, Sporting CP continues to represent excellence, integrity, and the passion of its supporters both in Portugal and around the world. With a modern vision and a proud heritage that spans more than a century, the club remains devoted to its founding motto: “Esforço, Dedicação, Devoção e Glória” — Effort, Dedication, Devotion, and Glory.
